Scribere de rebus magnis epigrammata ludus       Non1 est. Quid possit serius2 esse ioco?

1 The placement of non here to delay the negative and surprise the reader is emphatic. To capture this in the English translation, ludus is translated as ‘trivializes’ so that the next line could begin with ‘nothing’ to stand in for non est. 2 Comparative adverb
